Advent is a season for preparing our hearts to receive the gift of our Savior, Jesus, at Christmas. During this time, I’m filled with fond memories of my childhood. As the youngest of four children, I looked forward to our family tradition of lighting an Advent wreath and slowly moving the wisemen figures of our Nativity set towards the manger scene as we anticipated Christmas.
Within our homes and parishes, we come together to experience this season of hope and waiting. The Church invites us to consider this longing from the three different vantage points: the past, the present and the future.
As Advent begins, we often sing O Come, O Come Emmanuel, joining our prayers with those of our elder brothers and sisters in the faith who awaited the promised Messiah. It’s as if we go back in time and say with the Jewish people, “We need you, our Savior. We need God with us. We need the Messiah.” Yet within the same breath, we also express our need for Jesus in this moment. As we remember their prayer, we also make our own plea: Jesus, come into my heart. I need you in my family. I need you in my heart. I need you in my workplace. I need you in my neighborhood. I need you now.
Finally, as we draw closer to Christmas, we shift our gaze forward. With the Church we begin to say, “Come again, Lord Jesus.” We know that He already came. He’s present with us now in the Holy Eucharist, but we anticipate and long for the second coming of our Lord when He will make all things new.

Anhelando al Mesías
El Adviento es un tiempo para preparar nuestros corazones para recibir el regalo de nuestro Salvador, Jesús, en Navidad. Durante esta época, me lleno de gratos recuerdos de mi niñez. Como el menor de cuatro hijos, esperaba con ilusión nuestra tradición familiar de encender la Corona de Adviento y mover poco a poco las figuras de los Reyes Magos de nuestro pesebre hacia el nacimiento mientras anticipábamos la Navidad.
En nuestros hogares y parroquias, nos reunimos para vivir este tiempo de esperanza y espera. La Iglesia nos invita a reflexionar sobre este anhelo desde tres perspectivas distintas: el pasado, el presente y el futuro.
Al comenzar el Adviento, a menudo cantamos Oh Ven, Oh Ven, Emmanuel, uniéndonos en oración a nuestros hermanos y hermanas mayores en la fe, quienes esperaban al Mesías prometido. Es como si regresáramos en el tiempo y dijéramos junto con el pueblo judío: “Te necesitamos, nuestro Salvador.” Necesitamos a Dios con nosotros. Necesitamos al Mesías.” Sin embargo, en el mismo instante también expresamos nuestra necesidad de Jesús en este momento. Al recordar su oración, hacemos también nuestra propia súplica: Jesús, ven a mi corazón. Te necesito en mi familia. Te necesito en mi corazón. Te necesito en mi trabajo. Te necesito en mi comunidad. Te necesito ahora.
Finalmente, al acercarnos más a la Navidad, dirigimos nuestra mirada hacia adelante. Con la Iglesia, empezamos a decir: “Ven de nuevo, Señor Jesús.” Sabemos que Él ya vino. Está presente con nosotros ahora en la Sagrada Eucaristía, pero anticipamos y anhelamos la segunda venida de nuestro Señor, cuando Él hará nuevas todas las cosas.
Cuenten con mis oraciones mientras avanzan en este tiempo de Adviento. Que anime su esperanza y su anhelo por Jesús. Él está con ustedes.
