St. Joseph Church, in Dyer, Indiana, is a vibrant, growing Catholic parish in search of a full time Director of Music. This position, under the supervision of the pastor, and in collaboration with other members of the parish, integrates various areas of responsibility within the overall mission of the parish.
As the music leader of the parish, the Director of Music, provides instrumental accompaniment and vocal assistance for liturgical celebrations, as well as formation, education, and practical preparation for liturgical celebrations for cantors/leaders of song, choir, and instrumental groups. The Director of Music will lead the parish liturgical music program, providing leadership in areas related to liturgical music, e.g., selects music and develops participation aids for the congregation, selects and maintains musical instruments, coordinates services and schedules of parish musicians, assures parish copyright permissions, etc.
The incumbent will serve as a resource consultant for parish concerns regarding liturgical music, helping to educate staff, liturgical ministers, ministers of music, and the congregation in developing their potentials to understand their role in worship celebrations and to celebrate liturgies with noble simplicity and musical quality. The successful Director of Music will assist in the recruiting of needed
liturgical ministers and musicians, while attempting to involve newcomers and a broad spectrum of parishioners. In addition, he or she will communicate effectively with parishioners, the pastor, and staff.
Requirements for this ministry include professional training in liturgy and music. Minimally, a bachelor’s degree or equivalent is required. Skills in piano, organ, and/or keyboard are also required.
