The Emmaus Conference scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 9 at the Porter County Expo Center in Valparaiso is an opportunity for the faithful of Northwest Indiana to gather as one diocesan family – across cultures, languages and parishes – to encounter the Risen Christ, just like the disciples on the road to Emmaus.
Claudia Sadowski, Ph.D., coordinator of intercultural ministry for the Diocese of Gary, explained the conference will be a space where Catholics are renewed in their call to missionary discipleship and reminded that they are not alone on the journey. In a time when many are yearning for connection, meaning and hope, she said, the event offers a true encounter with Christ and with one another.
“I encourage people to register because they will leave uplifted, inspired and better equipped to live out their faith in daily life,” Sadowski said. “Whether someone is new to the faith or has served in ministry for decades, this is a unique moment of formation, fellowship and fire – fire for the mission.”
She added, “It’s also a chance to meet others walking similar paths and to be reminded that God is still calling us today to be the Church of compassion, mercy and joy.”
Sadowski is looking forward to witnessing the Holy Spirit move through the diocesan communities as they come together. She said there is something deeply sacred about seeing people from different cultures and generations worship, learn and serve side by side.
Sadowski pointed out that the Spanish-speaking Catholic community is vibrant and growing, making it essential to the life of the Church. Therefore, offering a full track in Spanish is a sign of respect, integration and commitment to walking together as one Church.
“It ensures that all people can receive, reflect and respond to the message of Christ in their heart – and that is powerful,” she said. “This track also recognizes the gifts the Hispanic community brings to the wider Church and makes space for their voices, leadership and wisdom.”
Sadowski feels the conference is blessed to have an exceptional group of presenters in the Spanish track, each chosen for their expertise, love for ministry and lived experience in Hispanic communities.
“I’m especially excited for the breakout sessions where people can have deep, meaningful conversations and leave with something practical for their lives,” she said.
Each presenter was selected not only for their credentials, but because they genuinely understand and serve Hispanic communities. They bring compassion, practical tools and inspiration for everyday life and ministry.
“Together, this speaker team reflects the strength and spiritual richness of the Hispanic Catholic community – and I believe their voices will resonate deeply with all attendees,” Sadowski said.

Conferencia sobre discipulado misionero ofrece a la comunidad hispana ponentes únicos y poderosos

La Conferencia Emaús, programada para el sábado 9 de agosto en el Centro de Exposiciones del Condado de Porter en Valparaíso, es una oportunidad para que los fieles del noroeste de Indiana se reúnan como una sola familia diocesana —a través de culturas, idiomas y parroquias— para encontrarse con Cristo Resucitado, tal como lo hicieron los discípulos en el camino a Emaús.
La doctora Claudia Sadowski, Ph.D., coordinadora del ministerio intercultural de la Diócesis de Gary, explicó que la conferencia será un espacio donde los católicos serán renovados en su llamado al discipulado misionero y recordarán que no están solos en el camino. En un tiempo en que muchos anhelan conexión, sentido y esperanza, dijo, el evento ofrece un verdadero encuentro con Cristo y entre unos y otros.
“Animo a todos a inscribirse porque saldrán fortalecidos, inspirados y mejor equipados para vivir su fe en la vida diaria”, dijo la Dra. Sadowski. “Ya sea que la personas sean nuevas en la fe o hayan servido en el ministerio durante décadas, este es un momento único de formación, fraternidad y fuego —fuego por la misión—.”
Agregó: “También es una oportunidad para conocer a otras personas que caminan senderos similares y para recordar que Dios todavía nos llama hoy a ser una Iglesia de compasión, misericordia y alegría.”
La Dra. Sadowski espera con entusiasmo ser testigo de cómo el Espíritu Santo se mueve a través de las comunidades diocesanas al unirse. Dijo que hay algo profundamente sagrado en ver a personas de diferentes culturas y generaciones adorar, aprender y servir lado a lado.
La Dra. Sadowski señaló que la comunidad católica de habla hispana es vibrante y está en crecimiento, por lo que es esencial para la vida de la Iglesia. Por eso, ofrecer secciones completas en español es una señal de respeto, integración y compromiso para caminar juntos como una sola Iglesia.
