As I write this column, we have completed our beautiful days of having the National Eucharistic pilgrimage travel through our diocese. I am looking forward to the National Eucharistic Congress in Indianapolis which will be underway as this is published. These days of renewal have prepared us to be sent forth to share the Eucharistic love of Jesus with all.
Each of the five days we journeyed with the National Eucharistic Pilgrimage was filled with blessings and hope. We exceeded all expectations regarding the number of walking pilgrims and were delighted to have many attend various events over the week. More than five thousand participated in the events throughout the diocese.
We came together from throughout the diocese as a family of faith. I enjoyed seeing parishioners come from parts near and far to experience and celebrate that Jesus is alive in the Eucharist. For a full recap of those days, please go here: dcgary.org/eucharistic-revival.

In my own prayer for all of us in the diocese, I am drawn to the reading appointed for the Memorial of St. Bonaventure which we used for our Mass to Commission Eucharistic Congress attendees. In this passage from his letter to the Ephesians, St. Paul reveals his prayer for them, which I renew for all the faithful of our diocese:
Brothers and sisters:
I kneel before the Father,
from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named,
that he may grant you in accord with the riches of his glory
to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inner self,
and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith;
that you, rooted and grounded in love,
may have strength to comprehend with all the holy ones
what is the breadth and length and height and depth,
and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge,
so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. (Eph 3:14-19)
I pray that in the Eucharist, you may be “strengthened with power through his Spirit,” “Christ may dwell in your hearts,” you may “know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge” and be “filled with all the fullness of God.”
As we are filled and nourished by Jesus Himself in the Eucharist, we are then sent forth. The traditional dismissal at the end of the Mass in Latin is “ite, missa est.” Pope Benedict XVI tells us these words have taken on a missionary meaning: "In antiquity, missa simply meant 'dismissal'. In Christian usage, however, it gradually took on a deeper meaning. The word 'dismissal' has come to imply a 'mission'. These few words succinctly express the missionary nature of the Church.” (Sacramentum caritatis, 51 [2007])
Strengthened by the Eucharist, may we then be sent forth on mission to share his love with all. Please join me in praying that we will experience true Eucharistic revival in the Diocese of Gary and throughout our country.

Renovados en la Eucaristía y Enviados
Mientras escribo esta columna, hemos completado nuestros hermosos días en los que la peregrinación Eucarística Nacional ha recorrido nuestra diócesis. Estoy deseando que llegue el Congreso Eucarístico Nacional en Indianápolis, que estará en marcha cuando esto se publique. Estos días de renovación nos han preparado para ser enviados a compartir el amor eucarístico de Jesús con todos.
Cada uno de los cinco días que viajamos con la Peregrinación Eucarística Nacional estuvo lleno de bendiciones y esperanza. Superamos todas las expectativas en cuanto al número de peregrinos a pie y nos alegramos de que muchos asistieran a diversos actos a lo largo de la semana. En mi propia oración por todos nosotros en la diócesis, me siento atraído por la lectura designada para la Conmemoración de San Buenaventura que utilizamos para nuestra Misa de Comisión a los asistentes al Congreso Eucarístico. En este pasaje de su carta a los Efesios, san Pablo revela su oración por ellos, que yo renuevo por todos los fieles de nuestra diócesis:
Hermanos y hermanas:
Me arrodillo ante el Padre,
de quien procede toda familia en el cielo y en la tierra,
para que os conceda conforme a las riquezas de su gloria
que seáis fortalecidos con poder en lo íntimo por su Espíritu
y que Cristo habite por la fe en vuestros corazones;
para que vosotros, arraigados y cimentados en el amor,
tengáis fuerza para comprender con todos los santos
cuál es la anchura, la longitud, la altura y la profundidad
y para conocer el amor de Cristo que sobrepasa todo conocimiento,
para que seáis llenos de toda la plenitud - Dios. (Ef 3,14-19)
Rezo para que en la Eucaristía seán "fortalecidos con el poder de su Espíritu", "Cristo habite en sus corazones", "conozcamos el amor de Cristo, que supera todo conocimiento" y sean "llenos de toda la plenitud de Dios".
Al ser saciados y alimentados por Jesús mismo en la Eucaristía, somos enviados. La despedida tradicional al final de la Misa en latín es "ite, missa est". El Papa Benedicto XVI nos dice que estas palabras han adquirido un significado misionero: "En la antigüedad, missa significaba simplemente 'despedida'. En el uso cristiano, sin embargo, fue adquiriendo un significado más profundo. La palabra 'despedida' ha llegado a implicar una 'misión'". Estas pocas palabras expresan sucintamente la naturaleza misionera de la Iglesia". (Sacramentum caritatis, 51 [2007])
