The National Eucharistic Congress came to a formal conclusion on Sunday, July 21 at a Mass with an assembly of more than 60,000 members of the faithful in Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. The Congress exceeded all expectations as an opportunity to pray, be inspired, learn about and celebrate our Eucharistic Lord.
More than 500 members of the diocese participated in person at the Congress. Beyond those who were physically present, many more experienced the Congress by the livestream and subsequent videos of the sessions posted on YouTube and elsewhere (https://tinyurl.com/ewtnNEC or https://relevantradio.com/national-eucharistic-congress/). I would encourage you to take a look at the various sessions and watch several of them, so you may also learn and be inspired. Spoiler alert: One of my favorites is from Jonathan Roumie, the actor who portrays Jesus in The Chosen. He included a reading from the sixth chapter of the Gospel of John that was amazing. Let me share with you a few insights from my time at the Congress and some ways you can continue to be a part of this time of revival that continues.
We Catholics have a beautiful array of ways to praise and worship our Lord. At the Congress, one could experience multiple ways to encounter and worship Jesus. Among the most profound were the times of Eucharistic adoration with a full Lucas Oil Stadium in silent prayer. A stadium that is normally a place of cheering and noise came to total silence as we honored the One who is worthy of all praise. In addition to Latin hymns and a beautiful orchestral final Mass, there were plenty of lively times of praise and worship, full of vigor and spontaneity.
Faithful from the Diocese of Gary had a blast. Our Diocesan Day on Saturday was full of joy. There were so many of us that I eventually planted myself at the entrance to the exhibition hall to be there to greet groups of Gary Catholics coming through. Everyone was happy, joyful and the smiles were plentiful. Our diocesan Mass on Saturday was outstanding – with our group delighted to celebrate together.
The Saturday procession through downtown Indianapolis was historic and moving. The streets were lined with the faithful who were excited to be a part of this. The procession included recent first communicants, religious sisters, seminarians, deacons, priests, and bishops – culminating in our Lord processed in a monstrance and concluding with benediction. The occasion was boisterous and solemn at the same time - beautifully reflecting the joy of being Catholic. Lots of families, age groups, and cultures were present, reminding me of the quotation attributed to James Joyce of the Catholic Church: “Here comes everybody.”
The Congress is over, but the time of revival must continue – with an outward focus to share the Good News. We will continue to enter into this time of revival with a day of service at the Cathedral of the Holy Angels on Saturday, Aug. 17 beginning with a Mass at 9 a.m. (more information here). Our Office of Missionary Discipleship and Evangelization is planning a “Back to Mass” weekend Sept. 14-15 for our parishes to invite those who have not been to Mass in a while. We are also sponsoring Eucharistic Adoration Passports, encouraging the faithful to visit eight different adoration chapels in the diocese. Special stamps have been created for each location, so be sure to have your passport stamped after you complete your time of prayer. We will celebrate a special Holy Hour on Friday, Oct. 11, on the vigil of Blessed (soon to be canonized) Carlo Acutis’ feast day. You can pick up a passport at any of the adoration chapels. It's an audacious thing for the bishops of the United States to declare in advance a Eucharistic Revival. Often one looks back at what the Lord did, and we can see how there was a genuine time of revival that occurred. For example, many people point to St. John Paul II’s World Youth Day in Denver in 1994 and now see that as a genuine turning point, a time of revival for the church in the United States. Many new lay apostolates emerged in the wake of that event and many youth found strength and hope in St. John Paul II’s confident expression of the joy of following Jesus.
I genuinely believe that what the U.S. bishops declared as a Eucharistic Revival three years ago is beginning to be realized. The full expression of such a revival will require our own conversion and outward sharing of the love of Jesus with others. Let’s be renewed in our commitment to celebrate and share the beauty of our faith in Jesus. In so doing, the events in Indy from a couple of weeks ago will be more than memories. They will be a turning point for the Church here in Gary and throughout the United States.

El Congreso Eucarístico Nacional llegó a su conclusión formal el domingo 21 de julio en una Misa con una asamblea de más de 60.000 fieles en el Lucas Oil Stadium de Indianápolis. Permítanme compartir con ustedes algunas reflexiones de mi tiempo en el Congreso y algunas maneras en que pueden seguir siendo parte de este tiempo de avivamiento que continúa.
Los católicos tenemos una hermosa variedad de formas de alabar y adorar a nuestro Señor. En el Congreso, uno podía experimentar múltiples maneras de encontrar y adorar a Jesús. Entre las más profundas estuvieron los momentos de adoración eucarística con un Lucas Oil Stadium lleno en oración silenciosa. Un estadio que normalmente es un lugar de vítores y ruido se convirtió en silencio total mientras honrábamos a Aquel que es digno de toda alabanza. Además de los himnos en latín y de una hermosa misa final orquestal, hubo muchos momentos animados de alabanza y adoración, llenos de vigor y espontaneidad.
Los fieles de la Diócesis de Gary se lo pasaron en grande. Nuestro Día Diocesano del sábado estuvo lleno de alegría. Éramos tantos que al final me planté en la entrada de la sala de exposiciones para estar allí y saludar a los grupos de católicos de Gary que pasaban. Todo el mundo estaba contento, alegre y las sonrisas eran abundantes. Nuestra misa diocesana del sábado fue excepcional, y nuestro grupo estuvo encantado de celebrarla juntos.
La procesión del sábado por el centro de Indianápolis fue histórica y conmovedora. Las calles estaban llenas de fieles emocionados por formar parte de ella. La procesión incluyó recién comulgados por primera vez, religiosas, seminaristas, diáconos, sacerdotes y obispos - culminando con Nuestro Señor procesado en una custodia y concluyendo con la bendición. La ocasión fue bulliciosa y solemne al mismo tiempo - reflejando bellamente la alegría de ser católico. Muchas familias, grupos de edad y culturas estaban presentes, recordándome la cita atribuida a James Joyce de la Iglesia Católica: «Aquí viene todo el mundo».
El Congreso ha terminado, pero el tiempo de avivamiento debe continuar - con un enfoque hacia el exterior para compartir la Buena Nueva. Continuaremos entrando en este tiempo de avivamiento con un día de servicio en la Catedral de los Santos Ángeles el sábado 17 de agosto comenzando con una Misa a las 9 a.m. (enlace para más detalles). Nuestra Oficina de Discipulado Misionero y Evangelización está planeando un fin de semana de «Regreso a Misa» el 14 y 15 de septiembre para que nuestras parroquias inviten a aquellos que no han ido a Misa en algún tiempo. Muchos nuevos apostolados laicos surgieron a raíz de aquel acontecimiento y muchos jóvenes encontraron fuerza y esperanza en la expresión confiada de San Juan Pablo II sobre la alegría de seguir a Jesús.
Creo sinceramente que lo que los obispos de Estados Unidos declararon como un renacimiento eucarístico hace tres años está empezando a hacerse realidad. La plena expresión de ese renacimiento requerirá nuestra propia conversión y que compartamos el amor de Jesús con los demás. Renovemos nuestro compromiso de celebrar y compartir la belleza de nuestra fe en Jesús. Al hacerlo, los acontecimientos de Indy de hace un par de semanas serán algo más que recuerdos. Serán un punto de inflexión para la Iglesia aquí en Gary y en todo Estados Unidos.
