Did you know that our liturgical new year actually begins with the First Sunday of Advent? My parents used to go to a “New Year’s Party” hosted by some Catholic friends that would coincide with our liturgical new year in late November or early December, not January 1. Advent launches the liturgical new year, which then continues through the Christmas season. The Christmas season concludes with the celebration of the Baptism of Our Lord. Following this, we enter what the Church defines as the season of Ordinary Time, which is anything but “ordinary.”
The term Ordinary Time refers to the order of Sundays in the church year that do not fall into the major liturgical seasons of Advent, Christmas, Lent, or Easter. There is no First Sunday in Ordinary Time because the season begins with the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord.
Even though the season is divided into two parts, it is considered a single season, which, according to the Roman Missal, “begins on the Monday following the Sunday after January 6 and continues until the beginning of Lent; it begins again on the Monday after Pentecost Sunday and ends on the Saturday before the First Sunday of Advent.”
Throughout the liturgical year, we have numerous opportunities to grow in our relationship with Jesus Christ. Ordinary Time provides us with a beautiful opportunity to know Christ more intimately in the everyday realities of life. I encourage you to take time over the next few weeks before Lent to intentionally share the highs and lows of your ordinary days with family and friends, and most especially with Jesus. Let this be a time to strengthen your friendship with our Lord.

¡Feliz Año Nuevo! ¿En noviembre?
Pido a Dios que hayan disfrutado de una Navidad llena de alegría. Además del tiempo compartido con sus seres queridos, espero que hayan disfrutado de la primera edición de la revista FAITH Northwest Indiana, que se distribuyó en los hogares en diciembre. ¿Sabían que nuestro año litúrgico en realidad comienza con el primer domingo de Adviento? Mis padres solían asistir a una “fiesta de Año Nuevo” organizada por unos amigos católicos que coincidía con nuestro año litúrgico, a finales de noviembre o principios de diciembre, y no el 1 de enero. El Adviento da inicio al año litúrgico, que luego continúa durante el tiempo de Navidad. El tiempo de Navidad concluye con la celebración del Bautismo del Señor. Después de esto, entramos en lo que la Iglesia define como el Tiempo Ordinario, que está lejos de ser “ordinario.”
El término Tiempo Ordinario se refiere al orden de los domingos del año litúrgico que no pertenecen a los principales tiempos litúrgicos de Adviento, Navidad, Cuaresma o Pascua. No existe un primer domingo del Tiempo Ordinario porque este tiempo comienza con la Fiesta del Bautismo del Señor.
Aunque el tiempo está dividido en dos partes, se considera un solo tiempo que, según el Misal Romano, “comienza el lunes siguiente al domingo posterior al 6 de enero y continúa hasta el inicio de la Cuaresma; vuelve a comenzar el lunes después del domingo de Pentecostés y termina el sábado anterior al primer domingo de Adviento.”
A lo largo del año litúrgico, tenemos numerosas oportunidades para crecer en nuestra relación con Jesucristo. El Tiempo Ordinario nos brinda una hermosa oportunidad para conocer a Cristo más íntimamente en las realidades cotidianas de la vida. Los animo a que, durante las próximas semanas antes de la Cuaresma, se tomen el tiempo de compartir intencionalmente los momentos altos y bajos de sus días ordinarios con familiares y amigos, y muy especialmente con Jesús. Que este sea un tiempo para fortalecer su amistad con nuestro Señor.
