The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi) is celebrated this weekend. The “institution narrative” refers to the gospel passages in which Jesus institutes the Eucharist at the Last Supper. This institution is the fulfillment of the Passover celebration dating back to when the Israelites were set free from Egypt. The institution narrative is found in the gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke.
This Sunday we read from the Gospel according to Mark:
While they were eating,
he took bread, said the blessing,
broke it, gave it to them, and said,
"Take it; this is my body."
Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them,
and they all drank from it.
He said to them,
"This is my blood of the covenant,
which will be shed for many.” (Mk. 14:22-26)
Jesus commands “Do this in memory of me.” (Lk. 22:17-20). Christians from that time forward took this command quite literally as we Catholics continue to do through the celebration of the Mass.
The gospel of John gives an extended commentary from Jesus on the real presence of His body and blood in the Eucharist in the bread of life discourse. Along with the early Church, Catholics and Orthodox Christians have always agreed with the words of Jesus in the gospel of John: “For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.” (Jn 6:55)
The Eucharist is a gift to sustain and nourish us, to ensure we do not tire in our life’s journey. Nourished by Him, we are sent on mission. Through the Eucharist, Jesus gives his very self to us. The Solemnity of Corpus Christi is a time to celebrate this gift.

Este fin de semana se celebra la Solemnidad del Santísimo Cuerpo y Sangre de Cristo (Corpus Christi). La “narrativa de la institución” se refiere a los pasajes del Evangelio en los que Jesús instituye la Eucaristía en la Última Cena. Esta institución es el cumplimiento de la celebración de la Pascua que se remonta a cuando los israelitas fueron liberados de Egipto. Él les dijo:
"Esta es mi sangre del pacto,

Jesús ordena: "Hagan esto en memoria mía". (Lucas 22, 17 – 20). Los cristianos a partir de ese momento tomaron este mandato literalmente, como lo seguimos haciendo los católicos durante la celebración de la Misa.
El Evangelio de Juan ofrece un comentario extenso de Jesús sobre la presencia real de Su cuerpo y sangre en la Eucaristía en el discurso del pan de vida. Junto con la Iglesia primitiva, los católicos y los cristianos ortodoxos siempre han estado de acuerdo con las palabras de Jesús en el Evangelio de Juan: “Porque mi carne es verdadera comida y mi sangre es verdadera bebida.” (Juan 6, 55)
La Eucaristía es un regalo para sostenernos y nutrirnos, para garantizar que no nos cansemos en el camino de nuestra vida. Alimentados por Él, somos enviados a la misión. A través de la Eucaristía, Jesús se entrega a nosotros. La Solemnidad del Corpus Christi es un momento para celebrar este regalo.
