St. Mary Parish is seeking a Director of Music to support the pastor in planning and leading all liturgical and paraliturgical celebrations. The Director ensures music is provided with precision, expertise, and fidelity to liturgical norms.
Key Responsibilities
Musical
- Provide music for all weekend liturgies, Holy Days, and special celebrations.
- Play for weddings, funerals, quinceañeras, and sacramental events; consult with families for planning.
- Oversee music for seasonal and parish events; recruit, train, and direct cantors, choir, and instrumentalists.
- Ensure timely distribution of music and hire additional musicians for major feasts.
- Lead the Parish Liturgy Committee with the pastor; communicate, plan, and record minutes.
- Submit bulletin/pulpit announcements to promote events and catechize regarding music.
- Incorporate a wide variety of styles: chant, hymnody, contemporary Catholic music, and Praise & Worship.
Team Collaboration
- Work with the Parish Leadership Team to implement vision and formation in Worship.
- Support and model the mission of the Diocese of Gary and St. Mary Parish in all interactions.
- Maintain confidentiality, professionalism, and openness to new ideas.
Skills & Expertise
- Proficiency in piano and organ (beyond basic skill); ability to improvise, sight-read, and ideally sing/play simultaneously.
- Competence with music notation software (e.g., Dorico), arranging for various instruments, and creating worship aids.
- Experience with Publisher, Breaking Bread Digital, and music recording software (e.g., Bandlab).
- Willingness to learn new parish tools (e.g., Camino, Ministry Scheduler Pro).
Qualifications
- Degree in Music or 3–5 years of experience as a Catholic parish Music Director.
- Strong knowledge of Catholic faith and liturgy.
Conditions
- Duties involve standing, sitting, walking, typing, climbing stairs, and repetitive motions.
- Work is performed in office and church loft.
