![Veriie Suggs, director of the Ss. Monica and Luke Soup Kitchen, helps Father Mike Surufka, pastor, bless the new commercial grade stove and prep table unveiled on April 30 during the Gary soup kitchen's 30th Anniversary Celebration. Funds from the operations budget, used to purchase the stove, need to be replaced, said Suggs, who noted that about 20 years ago, a small news item in the Northwest Indiana Catholic helped the ministry raise $10,000 for the previous stove. Is your heart stirred up and set ablaze with the love of God through the Eucharistic Revival events? Ready to go out to serve in word and deed? The diocese is sponsoring a Day of Service on Saturday, August 17, 2024, to bring that fire and energy into our communities. Through the Eucharist, God desires to heal, redeem, and unify the Church and the world, and we can be a part of it.
Our Day of Service starts with the celebration of the Mass at Holy Angels Cathedral by Bishop McClory at 9 AM. Fed with the Eucharist and the Word of God, we will go out together and share it in service and love, from 10 am to about noon, working with charitable organizations such as:
- Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ and the Missionary of Charity Sisters- gardening, cleaning, packing food bags, and organizing donations
- St. Monica and St. Luke – Food pantry
- St. John -St. Joseph Catholic Cemeteries – resetting monuments and cleaning up landscaping
- Senior housing – making and serving breakfast in their community room
- Office of Missionary Discipleship - organizing and packing care boxes for the migrant workers in our area
- Holy Angels Cathedral - painting and cleaning at the Cathedral
At 1 PM we will gather once again at the Cathedral for a cook-out, courtesy of the Franciscan Fathers and the Secular Franciscans.
